Google employees are allowed to work from home a few days a week.So when only a small percentage of employees are working in the office, manydeskis empty.
Google spokesman Ryan Lamont said the move was to improve “real estate efficiency” and that the company was terminating leases on an undisclosed amount of vacant office space.
Under the new policy, employees will be matched with another colleague to share a desk. Employees rotate into the office to ensure a desk is available. At the same time, Google employees are required to work in the shared space of the office at least two days a week. Google said it implemented the change based on employee feedback.
“Since employees returned to the office, we’ve conducted pilots and surveyed cloud employees to explore different hybrid work models to help shape the best experience,” Google said in a statement.
Google is trying to ensure that its real estate investments align with the needs of hybrid work models. The real estate cost savings will also allow Google to invest in the growth of its cloud division.
According to the company, the new sharing model “enhances the company’s hybrid working approach while, at the same time, allowing it to use space more efficiently.” ◇
