While teachers tend to have great job security, summer vacations and pensions, they are largely paid by the state government, which has not kept pace with inflation over the years, CNBC reported. Likewise, theology majors often work in modestly paid educational jobs.
By contrast, the highest-paying majors are all in STEM fields, an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM jobs are in high demand, as such jobs are expected to grow at twice the rate of non-STEM jobs through 2031. Most of the 10 highest-paying majors five years out of college are engineering. Chemical engineers top the list with a median annual salary of $75,000.
Later in the careers of these STEM majors, the pay gap nearly doubles. Graduates of the lowest-earning majors earned a median annual mid-career salary of less than $60,000, while graduates of the highest-earning majors earned more than six figures.
The following are the ten lowest-paying majors and their median annual salaries for college students in the middle of their careers (ages 35-45).

Data for this study was compiled from the 2021 U.S. Census report, the most recent data available. Specifically, the data is based on college graduates who are working full-time, have only a bachelor’s degree, and are between the ages of 22 and 27. Data for mid-career graduates is based on 35- to 45-year-olds who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. ◇
